E.L.I.M. PIPP Grant

E.L.I.M. stands for Engaged in lifelong learning, inspiration, and movement.

Valley View Village will be using the grant for a SeniorFit Wellness Program and Learning Academy that we are offering our residents.  SeniorFit is an exercise program that promotes strength and endurance. The Learning Academy will focus on the learning portion of the E.L.I.M. PIPP Grant.

SeniorFit Wellness Program

Promoting Mobility

Mobility is key to health and well-being.  Sometimes when we (or our loved ones) get older mobility becomes more difficult.  The main reason that this happens is that we often slow down and become less physically active without even realizing it.  Also, when we (or our loved ones) must spend extended time in a healthcare facility to receive care there is even less opportunity to move around and be physically active.  Even though our care plans often require rest and recovery, we now know that residents have better outcomes when they remain mobile.  Since our goal is to provide you (or your loved one) the very best care, our care plan now includes a mobility enhancement program designed to help you (or your loved one) regain your (his/her) strength, stamina, fitness, mobility, and balance.

Importance of Maintaining Mobility

Many people don’t realize how important mobility is to everyday living.  That is until mobility becomes impaired.  Similarly, many people don’t realize how important mobility is to overall health and well-being.  Mobility allows individuals to be active and perform physical activities.  Physical activity has been associated with many health benefits.  In fact, it is now widely believed that the mobility impairments that individuals experience with age is not just a consequence of aging.  Instead, the mobility impairments are largely attributed to disuse and too little physical activity.  The good news is that with too little physical activity being the cause, it is easy to reverse.  We can reverse this consequence by finding ways to get more activity!

Benefits of the SeniorFit Wellness® Program

While there is plenty that your healthcare team can do to make you comfortable and treat your ailment, the best defense comes from you!  When you are physically active your body is better conditioned to repair itself and fight off whatever condition is affecting you from the inside out.  Actually increasing your internal ability to fight off injury or ailment is far more beneficial overall than simply alleviating the symptoms.

The SeniorFit Wellness® Program is designed to help you maintain and improve your mobility.

Our goals for you in your participation in this program are to:

  • Promote blood flow and circulation
  • Enhance your muscle strength and function
  • Help you to retain your independence
  • Reduce your risk of developing bed sores
  • Help you to feel sturdier on your feet
  • Improve your energy and mood
  • Help you to sleep better at night
  • Maintain your muscle tone
  • Recover faster

Everyone is Included!

You might be thinking that benefits of mobility and physical activity sound great, but if I am confined to a wheelchair or am bedridden it is not going to do me much good.  You are wrong about that.  Everybody can benefit from enhanced mobility.  That is why we have a program specific to individuals who are bedridden.  It is possible to strengthen all of the major muscle groups in the body while lying on your back in bed.  While the ultimate goal is to help you develop the strength and stamina to get you on your feet again, the benefits of mobility are far broader than simply being more mobile.

What does the program include?

The multi-level program includes targeted exercises of all of the major muscle groups that can be completed with minimal equipment in the comfort of your own room.  Exercises are designed to promote strength, range of motion, increase cardiac output, promote blood flow, train positional awareness, and improve balance.  All exercises are done at your own level and we have a special scale to help make sure that we do not push you too hard or not enough.  If a particular exercise is just not right for you, our program has options to make sure that we find one that works for your body.

Learning Academy

The E.L.I.M. PIPP grant will also be focusing on providing additional opportunities for our residents to learn. We will be offering two learning programs! The first one is “Learn How to Play the Piano” where residents will be given piano lessons. The second learning program is “Wii Bowling Lessons” where our residents will get to go bowling in the comfort of their homes at Valley View Village!
